Account Tax Categories are configured in Setup / Finance / Taxes / Account Tax Categories

Overview #

Account tax categories are used to classify accounts for taxation purposes. They allow the tax engine to apply different tax behavior based on how the account is categorized, such as business, residential, partner, or another tax-relevant account grouping.

An account tax category is typically used together with tax codes and account configuration. When the same category is used on both the account and the tax code, the system can match the transaction to the appropriate tax treatment.

Tax Code Selection #

When the system selects a tax code for an account-related transaction, the configured account tax category is one of the values considered during the match. A tax code with a matching account tax category is more specific than one that leaves that category unset.

If multiple tax codes still match, other factors such as service tax category and location can affect which tax code is ultimately selected.

Prerequisites #

There are no required prerequisite setup steps before creating account tax categories.

Account Tax Categories Panel #

The Account Tax Categories panel on the left displays the available account tax categories. Selecting a category loads its details on the right so you can review or update it.

Fields #

  • Name: The descriptive name for the account tax category.

References Tab #

The References tab shows where the selected account tax category is already in use. This helps determine the impact of changes and whether the category can be deleted.

Depending on the type of reference, the tab can show details such as:

  • Name: The related account or configuration item.
  • Status: The status of the related account when the reference is account-based.
  • Account Type: The related account type, when one is available.
  • Identity: The identifier of a related record.
  • Invoice Amount: The invoice amount shown for an invoice-tax-related reference.
  • Tax Amount: The tax amount shown for an invoice-tax-related reference.
