Rounding Rules are configured in Setup / Usage Rating / Rate Types / Rounding Rules

Overview #

Rounding Rules are used to control how usage is rounded before charges are calculated. They allow you to define both a minimum billable value and the increment used after that minimum has been reached.

For example, a rounding rule can be used to bill voice usage with a one-minute minimum and then round additional time in smaller increments, such as six-second blocks. Once created, rounding rules can be assigned to usage rates so that rating follows the intended billing pattern.

The Rounding Rules Panel #

The Rounding Rules panel on the left displays the rules that already exist in the system. Select a rule to load its details on the right.

The list shows key information for each rule, including the rule name, minimum value, increment value, and whether the rule is currently active.

The Edit Rounding Rule Panel #

The panel on the right displays the selected rounding rule and is where you maintain its configuration.

Main Fields #

  • Name: The unique name of the rounding rule.
  • Active: Controls whether the rule is available for selection on usage rates. Inactive rules remain in the system but are not offered for new selection.
  • Base Unit Type: Defines the type of usage being rounded, such as time, data, or count.
  • Unit Type: Defines the specific unit used within the selected base unit type, such as seconds, minutes, or megabytes.
  • Minimum: The minimum billable value that will be applied when usage is lower than the configured threshold.
  • Increment: The step used to round usage after the minimum has been reached.
  • Sort Order: Controls the order in which the rule appears in selection lists.

Notes About Field Behavior #

  • Unit Type is filtered based on the selected Base Unit Type.
  • After a rounding rule has been created, Base Unit Type and Unit Type are no longer editable on the existing record.
  • The References tab is only shown for saved rules.

References Tab #

The References tab shows where the selected rounding rule is being used. This is helpful when determining whether the rule can be deleted or when assessing the impact of changing it. Reference entries can include related usage rate information such as the rate name, usage rate group, and usage class.

Adding Rounding Rules #

To add a rounding rule:

  1. In the Rounding Rules panel, click Add.
  2. Enter the Name.
  3. Set Active if the rule should be available for use immediately.
  4. Select the Base Unit Type.
  5. Select the Unit Type.
  6. Enter the Minimum value.
  7. Enter the Increment value.
  8. Enter the Sort Order.
  9. Save the rule.

Editing Rounding Rules #

To edit an existing rounding rule:

  1. Select the rule in the Rounding Rules panel.
  2. Update the editable fields as needed.
  3. Save the changes.

Because Base Unit Type and Unit Type are fixed after creation, changes to those values require creating a new rule instead of editing the existing one.

Deleting Rounding Rules #

Note: Rounding rules that are configured on usage rates are in use and cannot be deleted (the delete action button will be greyed out in this case). In order to delete a rule in use first check the References tab on the Edit Rounding Rule panel to determine which rates are configured with the rule. Next, proceed to modify the usage rate to use a different rounding rule.

To delete a rule:

  1. Select the rule in the Rounding Rules panel.
  2. Click Delete.
  3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.
