Service Tax Categories are configured in Setup / Finance / Taxes / Service Tax Categories

Overview #

Service tax categories are used to identify service-specific taxation scenarios. They allow taxation behavior to differ based on the type of service being billed, so that a tax code can apply one set of taxes to one service category and a different set of taxes to another.

A service tax category is typically used together with tax codes and service configuration. When the same category is used on both the service side and the tax-code side, the system can match the transaction to the appropriate tax treatment.

Service tax categories can also be relevant when usage taxation needs to be handled differently from non-usage charges, depending on how the service and usage-related configuration is set up.

Tax Code Selection #

When the system selects a tax code for a service-related transaction, the configured service tax category is one of the values considered during the match. A tax code with a matching service tax category is more specific than a tax code that does not specify one.

If multiple matching tax codes are available, other criteria such as account tax category and location can still affect which tax code is selected.

Prerequisites #

There are no required prerequisite setup steps before creating service tax categories.

Fields #

  • Name: The descriptive name for the service tax category.
