Overview #
The Usage Classes screen is used to define the usage classes that identify and categorize usage before it is rated. A usage class helps determine how usage should be interpreted, what type of unit it uses, and which rating logic can be applied.
Classes are commonly used to separate different kinds of usage, such as voice, SMS, data, or other custom usage categories. Once a class has been assigned during mediation or rating preparation, downstream rating logic can use that class to select the correct rate.
This screen is also used to configure whether a class is rated directly by class or by GeoTree location, and whether additional resolver behavior should be used when location-group resolution is enabled.
Prerequisites #
The GeoTree must be configured if you intend to use GeoTree-based rating for the class.
The Classes Panel #
The Classes panel on the left displays the usage classes that already exist in the system. Select a class to load its details in the edit panel on the right.
The list provides a quick summary of the configured class, including the selected rater, unit type, and class type.

The Edit Class Panel #
The panel on the right displays the selected usage class and is where you maintain its settings.
Main Fields #
- Name: The unique name of the usage class.
- Rater: Determines how the class will be rated. This controls whether rating is based only on the usage class itself or whether GeoTree location can also be used in rate selection.
- Unit Type: Defines how usage is measured for the class, such as time, data, or count. This value is set when the class is created and is not editable for existing classes.
- Usage Class Type: Optionally categorizes the class for reporting, mediation, or organizational purposes.
- Tax Category: Lets the class carry a service tax category that can be used for usage taxation in environments where real-time taxation is enabled.
Usage Class Resolver Settings #
If usage class resolver support is active for the owner, the screen also displays resolver-related configuration.
- Usage Class Resolver Type: Determines how the application resolves usage class behavior when location-group logic is being used.
- In Country Usage Class: Selects the usage class that should apply when the usage is determined to be in-country.
- In Zone Usage Class: Selects the usage class that should apply when the usage is determined to be in-zone.
The In Country Usage Class and In Zone Usage Class fields are required only when the selected resolver type uses location-group resolution.
References Tab #
The References tab shows where the selected usage class is currently used in the system. This is especially important when determining whether the class can be deleted or when assessing the impact of changing a class configuration.
The reference view can show both summary usage and specific referenced entities, depending on the selected reference context.
