Overview #
Dynamic Usage Classes are used when a single standard usage class is not specific enough for rating. Instead of always assigning the same usage class to similar usage, the system can apply additional rules to determine a more specific usage class before rating occurs.
This is useful when the final usage class should depend on both the network-related value on the usage record, such as carrier, and the location where the usage occurred. For example, usage that would normally be treated as one general class can be reassigned to different usage classes depending on the carrier and location group that match the rule.
Once the dynamic usage class assigns the more specific usage class, the rating engine can apply the correct rate for that scenario.
Each dynamic usage class contains an ordered list of rules. The rules are evaluated from top to bottom, so the rule order determines which result is applied first when more than one rule could match.
Prerequisites #
- A custom field list must be configured on the mediation entity for the variable that will drive the rule selection, such as carrier or network.
- In Owner Configuration, the Dynamic Usage Class option must be enabled and pointed to the appropriate rule variable.
- Location groups must already exist so they can be used in dynamic usage class rules.
If dynamic usage classes are not enabled for the current owner, the screen displays a configuration message instead of the normal editing layout.
Dynamic Usage Classes Panel #
The Dynamic Usage Classes panel on the left displays the dynamic usage classes that already exist in the system. Select a dynamic usage class to load its details in the edit panel on the right.
